Deputy Secretary General's Address

Dear Delegates,

We live in a blurred reality, marred by disarray and mayhem. As we look around, we see humanity plunging into a deep, dark abyss, which was formed by the inactions of humanity itself. In our individual expeditions towards the Isle of Greed, we cause a tempest of chaos and untruth. In an attempt to arise from this chaos and untruth, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to LMCMUN 2023- a conference which provides a platform for the sharpest minds of the country to search for the truth in a web of deceit, and search for the order which encircles chaos.

Since the first LMCMUN in 2009, the world has unravelled in front of our eyes and has shown shades of colour we didn't think existed. Ranging from the various economic crises and social imbalances, the world has seen it all. In such turbulent times, diplomacy is the need of the hour, and it has become necessary to foster a future generation which is capable of tackling complex geopolitical problems astutely.

This is where the Model United Nation conferences play a vital role in nurturing the young generation by giving them a platform to understand the problems facing humanity today and to express themselves as orators and thinkers. MUN provides an opportunity to the youth by putting them on the spot and making them think on their feet- a skill which our dependence on technology has rendered us devoid of. If we do not think, we cannot be. In the words of Parmahansa Yogananda, “Thinkers do not accept the inevitable, they turn their efforts towards changing it”. Thinkers- that is what Model UN makes us; that is what we are compelled to become.

We are exposed to the real world, albeit on a small scale, and we realise that the world is not black and white, and that the grey is far more complicated than what it is made out to be. We enter an ulterior world of deceit, toil, and interpersonal interaction, mirroring the real world itself. MUN opens a whole new paradigm for the sheltered, unexposed mass of students and its role in moulding future thinkers cannot be understated.

Hence, LMCMUN 2023 will attempt to un-blur the reality that currently surrounds us and expose us to the moral grey, the unexplored archetype which requires every delegate to put their best foot forward. The conference aims to incorporate all 3 paragons of being- expatriating delegates to Qing’s Council set in 1839, discussing present-day environmental issues, and transgressing into the year 2026.

I, as the Deputy Secretary-General, will strive to ensure an enthralling, enriching and unforgettable experience over the three days of the conference.

Looking forward to an engaging amalgamation of ideas,

Until May,

Jaiveer Singh Madan,

Chairperson,

The Joint Crisis Committee.

Deputy Secretary General,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2023.
