Agenda
Discussing the need for the setting up and promotion of fact-checking services to combat the ramifications of misinformation and biased news
About Committee

The International Press Corps is a dynamic and innovative committee that brings together individuals from all walks of life who share a passion for accurate and responsible journalism. This committee is centred on the pressing issue of misinformation, which has become increasingly prevalent in today's rapidly evolving news landscape.

The members of the Press Corps are committed to ensuring that the public has access to reliable and trustworthy information. To this end, a team of reporters from world-wide news agencies will be engaging in lively discussions and debates about the need for close regulation of news services and the establishment of robust fact-checking services. Our aim is to provide a forum for developing strategies to keep people from getting caught up in their own echo chambers.

In addition to this, the committee will be focused on preventing self-radicalization due to biased news, by exploring the root causes of why individuals are susceptible to such news and how to keep these individuals from getting caught up in their own echo chambers. The discussions will touch upon the crucial role that the media plays in shaping public opinion. Lastly, the reporters shall broadcast the waxing and waning of the various other committees at LMCMUN 2023 as well, covering the verbatim of the delegates while questioning the same during the anticipated Press Conference.

What sets this committee apart is that we are combining serious discussions with a touch of fun. Our goal is to create an inclusive and engaging environment where individuals can exchange ideas and collaborate in a spirit of camaraderie. We believe that by bringing together a diverse group of vibrant thinkers, we can achieve meaningful and lasting solutions to the challenges posed by misleading media, while keeping the world informed and on track.

To contribute to the IPC would be to contribute to the future of journalism, welcome for any seasoned reporter, aspiring journalist, or editor with a passion for righteousness. Let’s make some headlines!

Chairpersons' Address

Greetings Delegates!
Welcome to the International Press Corps!
Allow us to introduce ourselves, the chairpersons, Anushka and Bhaswar.
I, Anushka, have a full-time job of being the #1 fan of The Office, and only after this come my duties of being your chairperson. Sorry, but priorities. Malcolm Gladwell is my favourite writer, and he sparked the passion in me for journalism in the first place. I should also warn you about the incessant pun-making that will occur for many weeks while you are around me. However, I can promise you that despite these fatal flaws of mine, I will always be available for anyone who needs, and try my best to make this a fulfilling experience for each of you.
Enter me, Bhaswar. Being engrossed in political conflicts and the tumults of the current international sphere, has caused me to gain interest in the idea of MUN and the meddlesome urge to understand the complications of human affairs. The passion for understanding intricacies of world politics complemented by the zeal to ask questions and assimilate answers has brought me to this point. I will also prioritise your needs, mainly because that would stall me from studying for my rapidly approaching AP examinations. Now, onto why we're here.
The Press will have its own dedicated committee after a month of Sundays, and that makes each and every one of you special. We will be thoroughly dissecting the big picture role that the press plays in the world, and channelling creativity and innovation as we learn how to combat misinformation. With the power the press holds in today’s society as a puppeteer that easily redirects public opinion, it is our job to hold those in power accountable. It’s when it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction, that we come in. We believe that the true essence of journalism lies in the minds of the individuals who challenge the system in order to change it for the better while simultaneously addressing the eight billion people of the world who give us the power to question in the first place.
So, for those of you who have joined this committee, we applaud you for recognizing our purpose, and we expect all of you to put in the hours. The pen is mightier than the sword, and through the means of diplomacy and conviction, we will ensure that the truth prevails together.
Until May,
Anushka Pujara & Bhaswar Gangopadhyay,
Chairpersons,
International Press Corps,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2023.
