About Committee

The African Union (AU) is a continent-based supranational organization consisting of 55 African countries as member states. The AU aims to promote international cooperation, decolonization pursuits, economic integration between members, defend individual sovereignty, and advance the well-being of all Africans. One significant concern that troubles the continent is the brutal conflict in Ethiopia. The Peace and Security Council of the African Union is the organ of the African Union responsible for prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts, with major emphasis on supporting and facilitating humanitarian action in such cases. The Protocol Relating to the establishment of this organ was adopted on July 9, 2002, and PSC became fully operational in early 2004.

This year, the African Union Peace and Security Council will be discussing in detail the escalation of Ethiopia’s Tigray Crisis, an ongoing conflict involving ethnic-regional militias, the government of Ethiopia, and the Eritrean military that has claimed the lives of over 500,000 individuals living in the northernmost region of Tigray and has triggered a humanitarian and refugee crisis with millions fleeing to neighbouring countries to seek shelter from the raging war. The committee will be fast-paced and will discuss in great detail this crisis that has the power to disturb the stability of all neighbouring countries and whose escalation would result in catastrophic destruction. To cultivate fruitful debate, delegates must dedicatedly research, understand their policy positions and provide efficient arguments on issues that will be discussed in the committee and must work together to ensure the peaceful end to the crisis.

Chairpersons' Address

Greetings Delegates!

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union at LMCMUN’23. The situation in Ethiopia is spiraling out of control and civilians are paying a horrific price. In Tigray, nearly 40 percent of the population is suffering from an extreme lack of food. This committee will be dynamic and exciting as delegates will have to cultivate fruitful debate and work together to solve the various problems of gender based violence along with severe food insecurity and the threats to peace and security of the people.

If you ever see a person ranting about Grey's Anatomy and murder documentaries to everyone around them, be rest assured that you’ve found Prisha Sethia. From being an avid fan of Taylor Swift to flexing about how they share the same birthday and cracking jokes even in the most serious of situations, Prisha has proven to be one of the most energetic and approachable class 12 students you will ever meet. Always being up to date with the current trends and complaining about not having a social life (which is a lie) are important elements of her personality (apart from being an overachiever). You can talk to her about anything without worrying about being judged (PS: she will judge you) and if you ever need someone who can click aesthetic pictures (those 0.5 camera pictures have pretty much been trademarked by her) of you, Prisha is your go to person and incase you can’t find her in the classroom, be sure to check the canteen!

If you ever hear someone yelling across the hallway or happen to come across an extremely energetic (and not at all annoying) person at 7 in the morning, be rest assured that you’ve found Garima Jhawar. Garima has heard every BTS song there is and watched every horror movie ever made. From being overly active on Twitter to changing what she wants to pursue in college every day, there is never a dull moment around Garima. If you ever want to hear a pickup line or do something crazy, Garima is your go to person. She somehow manages to impress her friends' parents enough for them to serve her water in a "glass" glass instead of a steel glass. Although half her personality is being short and loud, she makes up for it by being one of the most genuine and big-hearted people. Her questions are longer than most people’s GSL speeches so just hope she doesn’t ask you a question.

We hope to see you in committee!

Until May,

Garima Jhawar & Prisha Sethia,

Chairpersons,

Peace and Security Council of the African Union,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2023.
