UNGA - SOCHUM

Agenda
Discussing the implications of impending climate disasters on vulnerable groups across the world

About Committee

The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), focuses broadly on the welfare and human rights of protected groups, humanitarian affairs and social matters. The central organ of the United Nations, the UNGA, includes all 193 Member States of the UN and stands as the only UN body today with universal representation.

For the 12th edition of LMCMUN, the General Assembly will convene to discuss the implications of impending climate disasters on vulnerable groups across the world. Climate change has, for decades now, been one of the most pressing international concerns for the global community. However, today climate change is no longer a problem for the future but an urgent global crisis that can no longer be ignored. Even as the world begins to experience the first debilitating impacts of climate change, one of the most pressing concerns for the global community today is the threat that the climate crisis presents to those vulnerable groups across the world who do not have the power, means, or resources to defend themselves from impending climate disasters.

What makes the SOCHUM one of the most relevant committees of LMCMUN 2023 is the often ignored social and humanitarian repercussions of the global climate emergency that it will be taking up instead of merely focussing on the scientific and statistical aspects of the same. This committee will require delegates to come together to formulate solutions that not only safeguard their own national interests but work to preserve and protect those groups that are most vulnerable to the adverse effects of global climate disasters.  Delegates can expect a committee with intriguing updates, compelling arguments, detailed research and, most importantly, extremely pertinent solutions.

Chairpersons' Address

Greetings Delegates!

It is our utmost honour and privilege to welcome one and all to the United Nations General Assembly - the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee discussing the implications of impending climate disasters on vulnerable groups across the world, simulated at the twelfth edition of La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations.

Climate change and the effect it has on vulnerable groups in particular, is a conversation seldom ignored but is one that is imperative to further understand how the phenomena affects the human race as a collective. To finally discuss at length the intricacies, nuances and vastness of the issue is a privilege we both are immensely grateful for.

The Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee is the Third Committee of the General Assembly and it will prove to be an extremely intriguing and engaging committee for all delegates. Delegates will be expected to have the most detailed research in their pocket while simultaneously delving into the nuance of the agenda. They will be participating in extensive discussions on the various social and cultural aspects of climate change and coming up with solutions to safeguard all people from its worst effects.

If there's two things you should know about Priyanka Banerjee, it's the fact that she will argue with you about your invariably wrong opinion on the Mahabharata, and that her hair will always take precedence over any and all beings in her life. A Humanities student with an unhealthy obsession with coffee, Priyanka is passionate about almost everything that manages to capture her attention for more than five minutes. This includes Communism, Grey's Anatomy and Indian poets. Her love for oration, Al Jazeera and Manto are the few things that truly encapsulate the unpredictability and brilliance of Priyanka. Overuse of the rainbow emoji, white tops, and correct punctuation are only a few of the many ways into her heart.

To delegates who are looking to win Sreemita's favour, it might be a better idea to divert your attention from the actual agenda to the faces of Monegasque racers and Argentinian football players. Being one of the most (un)likeable people you'll ever meet, don't be surprised if you find Sreemita giving you random pet names by hour two of committee. Her occasional ability to be truly nice, her constant ability to be one of the most hardworking people one can know and her insistence upon sticking with no favourite subject longer than ten minutes are the most rock solid facts you can know about SOCHUM's wisest chairperson. So buckle up for some serious football research and you'll have a fabulous time in committee!

We hope to inculcate a committee environment that offers constructive debate, and cooperative dialogue, to reach a hopeful yet realistic resolution to help those most vulnerable to the consequences of the biggest threat to the very existence of the human race.  We eagerly look forward to your presence in the committee and wish you all the very best for the three days of the conference ahead!

Until May,

Priyanka Banerjee and Sreemita Mukherjee,

Chairpersons,

United Nations General Assembly Third Committee,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2023.
